My immigration experience
Have you ever troubled with police ? Most migrants have experienced an immigration process but mine is a piece of cake when I compare those who came to the US by walking thousands of miles away, facing language barriers and difficult to get a long with their new country. My worst experience was while I was in Nairobi for the process of departure to the US. Two Kenyan police stopped and asked me money in the first hand or they will take me to jail. It was 2001 when I sent my first Lottery forms to the KCC( Kentucky Concular Center) where they process all DV Visa. Fortunaetly, I won the DV Visa and got congratulation letter and instruction forms from the KCC. The instruction was saying I had to go to Nairobi, Kenya eventhough I was living in Kampala, Uganda. In the meantime, I had only 30 days to finish all my process in terms of checking health, background, and getting recommendation from employer, verifying the validation of credentials including my trip leaving from Kampala to Nairobi. In the turning point was while I was coming from a health center in down town Nairobi, Kenya two Kenyan policemen stopped and asked me quick cash to pay them or I will pay the price if I don't do that means I will be going to jail not being paid to them. As far as we know the Kenyan police are notorious for kick backs when it comes to the Somalis ( ATM MACHINE). ATM Machine is a nickname of Somali Community in Nairobi given by the police. Refering that nickname there is a policy and procedure that says every Somali who lives in Nairobi must have money in his pocket or must confine to his house. In my point of view, I support that policy because without that policy they would have ended up in a jail which is in common a filthy, high wall, and out-numbered of gangs. Despite all those inappropriate manners from Kenyan police, I became defiant to pay any bribe because I was having a valid visa to stay that country. At the same time I was brave to say, " No Money.'' Finally, after I finished all my process I flew from Nairobi, Kenya to Minneapolis, MN with enjoyment and admiration.
